Children’s furniture is by far the most fun and creative of all types of bedroom furniture. Think about it. Remember when you could sleep in a bed shaped like a car? I had a ton of big colorful beanbag chairs in my childhood bedroom; sometimes I wish I could still get away with having some of those lying around. Although I can’t justify owning these items now, I can still get my kicks shopping around for my little cousins, nieces, nephews and anyone else who needs some guidance.
If you’ve been given the wonderful opportunity to furnish a child’s room, do me a favor and savor it. Pretend it’s your bedroom. Imagine all the fun things you can do. And just like toys and games, children’s products are getting so much more innovative and inventive. We’ve moved past the world of Lite Brites and Game Boys into a whirlwind of iPods and Guitar Hero. When it comes to a child’s place in the home, the possibilities are never-ending.
I stumbled upon so many unique and imaginative shops recently while I was helping my brother shop for some items to furnish his son’s bedroom. One fabulous modern furniture store New York had to offer sticks out in my mind. The place was like a giant playground; you could get lost in there. I so wanted to turn back time and be 10 years old again. But since that’s not possible, I enjoyed watching my nephew’s eyes light up as he got to roam around the store and play with all the toys and widget.
The reason why this particular furniture store in New York made such an impression was because it was seriously a one-stop shop for a kid’s room. Not only did they sell furniture, but they sold paint, games, books, bedding, art, and even some apparel. The merchandising displays also stood out. They set up small sample bedroom sets to give shoppers plenty of thoughts. When stores are so large and have thousands of products on display it can seem overwhelming, so it’s always nice to have ideas work with.
There’s one important matter you should make when shopping for children that I must stress. Please let them have at least a little input in the decisions. I have a horrible memory of my mother choosing an orange and purple bedspread with these enormous flowers as pillows. I hated the set, and I hated sleeping in my bed. I would always try to weasel my way into my parents’ bed, until they got sick of me. They ended up buying a whole new bedding set a few weeks later. Don’t put yourself through that drama.
